Skating Foundations

Skating Foundations is open to beginners 18 years+ who want to learn how to roller skate and begin learning the skills needed for the game of flat track roller derby.  If you’re determined, dedicated, and team-oriented, we want to hear from you! While a sports background is helpful, no experience is required.

How Skating Foundations Works

Over several weeks, we will teach you how to roller skate and the skills needed to play roller derby. The final session is a skills assessment. Pass that, and you’re on to Pier Pressure where you continue to learn game play and derby skills on your way to becoming a Rep skater for Hammer City.

Next Skating Foundations Program

If you’re interested in joining Skating Foundations or have any questions, complete our online skater intake questionnaire and we’ll get back to you and send you reminders about upcoming info and Skating Foundations sessions.

To be notified of when the next session may begin, please visit our contact page.

I’m ready! Let’s do this! How do I sign up?

Make sure you complete our online skater intake questionnaire so we can send you all the information on how to sign up and secure your spot.

How much does it cost?

The cost of 9 weeks of Skating Foundations classes is $125 plus $55 insurance (purchased through the WFTDi)

What equipment do I need?

You will need quad roller skates, knee pads, wrist guards, elbow pads, a mouthguard, and a helmet. Check out Rollergirl.ca, Retro Rollers, or Rollerskatin.ca for beginner packages.

To help alleviate the up-front cost of equipment, new skaters can borrow from HCRD’s Gear Lending Library. HCRD’s gear lending library exists to help skaters participate without worrying about the cost. Roller skates and safety equipment can be lent to new skaters free of charge. The gear lending library is mainly composed of donations from league members and others from the roller derby community.

Insurance

Insurance can be purchased through WFTDi

Pier Pressure

If you already know how to play roller derby or are returning to the sport after a hiatus, Pier Pressure is the place for you.  You’ll have the space to regain your derby legs alongside other returnees and freshly minted Skating Foundations grads.  Pier Pressure members can join regular league practices after demonstrating the required skill level. Cost is $30 per month (must already have insurance).
